Week 05: Empathize

This week, you will learn how to conduct user interviews to understand users’ needs, goals, and challenges. We will then analyze these interviews to identify patterns and themes that will help us define our design goals and requirements, guiding the overall design direction.

Topics

  1. Conducting User Interviews
  2. Interview Data analysis (Empathy Mapping, Affinity Mapping)

Class Activities

9/22. As a team,

  1. Define your target user groups and plan your recruitment strategy
  2. In your Figma team project file “DES3633 Collab”, create interview protocols.
  3. Develop interview questions organized into themes
  4. Test the interview questions with classmates
  5. Refine questions
  6. Develop separate set of questions for each user group (Faculty, Current/Prospective Students, Parents, Academic Advisor)
  7. Click here to access example protocol: https://www.figma.com/board/giYu9rZn5NApQ2uJjhYcIX/UX-research?node-id=969-1240&t=wSByzTBupwYEcdQv-0 (Reference only. Your protocol may be different)

9/24. As a team,

  1. Under your Figma team project “DES3633 Collab” file,  create empathy maps using this template for each interview following the mapping process: Absorb, Identify, Organize
  2. Synthesize the interview data using affinity mapping method
