Icons of the Zoo
This project explores the design of a unified symbol system for animals at the Oklahoma City Zoo. The final set of symbols balances clarity and consistency, translating complex animal forms into simple, recognizable symbols suitable for signage and educational use.
Challenge
The Oklahoma City Zoo needed a clear and consistent way to visually represent animals across signage and educational materials. I defined the challenge as translating complex animal forms into simple symbols that could be easily understood by visitors of all ages. Each symbol needed to feel distinct while still functioning as part of a unified system. Clarity, accessibility, and consistency guided the design decisions throughout the project.
Solution
I designed a cohesive symbol system using simplified forms, limited detail, and a shared grid structure. Each animal was reduced to its most recognizable features while maintaining balance and legibility. I applied consistent scale, line weight, and proportion to ensure the symbols worked together as a system. The final symbols adapt easily for both print and digital applications, including signage and posters.
Sketches
The process began with research and sketching focused on anatomy and proportion, allowing me to explore recognizable forms and refine ideas before building a consistent symbol system.
