Exploring and Framing AIX Design Challenge

Developing Solutions

To start the project, we first had to identify a problem. Working as a team, we brainstormed a few ideas. The project required a solution utilizing AI, so we explored every idea with AI in mind. We had trouble with a few because we didn’t know how AI could help or improve systems that were already in place. Our first project idea was for time management. We conducted research and found that upwards of 80% of college students struggle with time management. Our idea would use Ai to plan a schedule and provide tips for studying and staying focused. However, our problem and solution was similar to another group in the class, so we chose to pursue a different idea. We concluded that an app for maintaining consistency with physical exercise could benefit from the use of AI and help college students. We framed the problem and possible solutions while trying to understand its limitations. However, to ensure that our idea had merit, we conducted research.

Secondary Research

Conducting secondary research really helped us explore the possible use of AI paired with physical activity. With that said, we then looked at other applications to see how they helped with physical activity. We found a lot of examples; however, some of them required payment or subscriptions, so we had to rely on the app’s description. Some apps would provide dietary and workout conditions, others would target specific goals set out by the users. With that said, we also directly used AI such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. I actually never used Generative AI before this assignment. It was really interesting. I asked both if they could plan an exercise schedule. I gave them a somewhat similar schedule to my college classes, provided a time I could exercise, and said I wanted general exercise. ChatGPT came off very friendly and gave a schedule on a day-to-day basis. Google Gemini was more straightforward and gave a definitive schedule for the week. Interestingly, they both took into account conditioning and even rest. I even asked if the plan could be reworked to better fit my needs, which worked fairly well. They even provided a breakdown for understanding why the exercises were important and what they were meant to do. Needless to say, I think AI could be a useful tool for maintaining physical activity.

Reflection

Starting the project was kind of fun. I got to know my teammates, and we chose to pursue a problem that can be helpful for a lot of people, especially those with physical goals. I really liked the secondary research part of the project. I’ve never really messed with AI before, and this project gave me the perfect excuse to do so. I didn’t know that AI could come off as conversational, especially in regards to ChatGPT. I also didn’t know that it would give me helpful tips and insights outside of what I prompted it to do. It was all highly intuitive.
